John’s career began in the nonprofit sector, where he worked in the community mental health field and later served as a development officer for a national nonprofit organization. John’s career transitioned to the for profit sector when he joined an early stage company focused on providing assistance with personal and family problems through employer sponsored resources.
In 1990, John joined Right Management Consultants, a global consulting firm dedicated to helping executives through career transitions. In this role John also helped companies plan for and execute on major organizational change programs, with a focus both on the individuals who would exit the company and those who would remain.
In 1996, John and his colleague from Right Associates, Sally Stetson, created Salveson Stetson Group, Inc. (SSG), a retained executive search firm based in Radnor, PA. SSG has been named as Forbes Magazine’s best recruitment firms in America for several years and works with companies large and mid-sized to find leaders who drive success and guide the organization into the future. John’s work at SSG has focused on both for profit and nonprofit companies. He has led many successful searches for CEOs and their teams, as well as corporate board directors. In 2018, SSG was sold to Management Partners Inc. John continues to spend part of his time with SSG in a business development and search execution capacity.
Through most of his career, John has served on boards of directors for both nonprofit and for-profit organizations. Currently, he is Chairman of the Board of Directors for WHYY and Chairman of the Board of Directors of United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey. He is also an Emeritus Director for The Philadelphia Orchestra and is Founder and President of the Foundation to Abolish Child Sex Abuse. Finally, he is a director of Bellrock Intelligence, an early-stage company focused on the social determinants of health.
During his tenure with these organizations, he has co-chaired four CEO search committee, chaired a year-long task force on corporate governance, participated in board recruitment activities and assisted in the development and implementation of organizational strategy.
